Carolyn Petit: Subjective Reviewer of the Month, March 2014

This month, Objective Game Reviews launches a new feature, Subjective Reviewer of the Month. Each month we will interview someone who writes subjective reviews for other review outlets. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Review

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is a first person shooter in which players attempt to accomplish the objective of the game mode by killing enemy players, planting bombs, or getting kills with a succession of weapons. In round-based game modes, players begin each round by purchasing equipment with money earned in previous rounds. Various weapons are available to players and the various maps have different routes the players can use to reach the objectives.

500 Years Act 1 Review

500 Years Act 1 is a top down space combat adventure game. The player takes control of the captain of a ship that is launched the eponymous 500 years after humans have left Earth to establish colonies. The player’s colony was attacked by aliens called Ants and enslaved until recently. The player must fly the ship around the universe in an attempt to find other surviving human colonies and prepare for a possible return of the Ants. Gameplay includes exploration of the universe by moving from system to system, top down space combat, and dialog trees.

Cove of Flies Review

Cove of Flies is an interactive fiction Twine game in which the player enters a cave and moves in various directions a series of times in order to explore the cave. While exploring the cave the player is presented with vignettes describing various situations, like a spice trade or the player’s character’s fascination with holes or an instance where uneaten meat attracts eponymous flies.

Titanfall Review

Titanfall is a first person shooter in which two teams of six players each fight each other in an attempt to accomplish the objective of the game mode they are playing. In all game modes except Last Titan Standing, players respawn when killed, and can trigger the eponymous Titanfall after they have killed enough enemy players or enemy NPCs. Titans are large robots that operate on artificial intelligence when not piloted.

reProgram Review

reProgram is an interactive fiction Twine game in which the player controls the feelings and actions of a woman in a building that has an elevator. The player clicks on links to advance through the game and to cycle through words so as to alter the content of sentences, which then determine what happens in subsequent screens. The story involves meditation, insecurity, and masochism.

The Yawhg Review

The Yawhg is an interactive fiction adventure game where the players control characters for the six weeks preceding the appearance of the eponymous Yawhg, which threatens to wreak havoc. Up to four players control up to four characters by selecting locations for each character to visit and making choices about what the characters do when they visit the locations. Players can control more than one character if they so choose.

Paragon Review

Paragon is a puzzle game in which the player directs a sphere around levels in order to collect gems and gold. The player can only control the sphere when it is moving along the various rails of the level. The player controls the sphere by launching it in one of the two directions perpendicular to its movement along the rail.  Encountering spikes causes the sphere to be destroyed, at which point the player must restart the level. The player beats a level when all gems are collected.
