Bubsy 3d: Bubsy visits the James Turrell Retrospective is a third person platformer game in which the player controls Bubsy, an anthropomorphic cat, in his journey to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which contains a James Turrell Retrospective exhibit. Throughout the game the player collects orbs and hearts and reads dialog spoken by Bubsy and other characters.
Bubsy 3d: Bubsy visits the James Turrell Retrospective has five levels, three kinds of objects to collect, multiple arts, and frogs. Bubsy is able to jump and can also glide if the jump button is held down. The player may make use of fans spread around the levels to reach higher locations.
In Bubsy 3d: Bubsy visits the James Turrell Retrospective the player is given the option to explore some of the levels before progressing to the next stage. Exploring allows the player to collect additional colored spheres and hearts, which would otherwise remain uncollected. The player’s control over Bubsy’s is limited to turning him left or right, moving him towards or away from the camera, jumping, and triggering Bubsy’s glide. Bubsy is unable to strafe in either direction and the player cannot control the camera directly, nor exercise fine control over the amount to which Bubsy turns in any given direction.
The graphics of Bubsy 3d: Bubsy visits the James Turrell Retrospective are partially in a cartoon style and partially in a more realistic style depending on the object, character, or level being depicted. The game is made up of flat shaded polygons and textured polygons. When Bubsy glides, his body lies horizontal except for the pupils of his eyes, which remain at the height they were when Bubsy was upright. The sound in the game consists of squeaks when Bubsy jumps, cricket noises, sounds when Bubsy collects an item, and the sound of wind when Bubsy glides. The music in the game consists of simple music with a small number of tones and bells, and other music.
The UI elements denoting the number of spheres, hearts, and snakes Bubsy has collected are 3d representations of these objects. These representations are not fixed in location, and as the player moves they can become jumbled and collide with each other. The game has a series of cheat codes that can be entered at the beginning of the game. These include “tiny bubsy,” “immersive bubsy,” “cinematic mode,” “esports,” and “cool bubsy.”
