Dear Esther Review

In Dear Esther, the player explores an island in the Hebrides while listening to narration detailing letters written to the eponymous Esther about various topics. Brogue Review

Brogue is a roguelike game in which the player must descend to the 26th floor of a dungeon, retrieve the Amulet of Yendor, and return to the surface. Various monsters and traps exist in the dungeon which can prevent the player from accomplishing their objective. Items in the game confer various abilities that combine with the actions of monsters to create myriad results. Interacting with toads results in temporary hallucinations.

Bastion Review

Bastion is an isometric action RPG in which the player controls a character named the Kid as he progresses through the remnants of a ruined world and attempts to rebuild it. The Kid is able to equip different weapons and abilities that allow him to attack in various ways, like smashing things with a large hammer. Narration by one of the game’s characters accompanies the player’s actions and alters based on what the player chooses to do.

simian.interface Review

simian.interface is a puzzle game where the player is tasked with manipulating the game in order to align various two and three dimensional objects. When the objects are correctly aligned, the player progresses to the next level. Aligning objects requires ascertaining their location and orientation and discovering which direction of manipulation will lead to alignment.

Portal Review

In Portal, the player controls a character in a testing facility made up of a series of test chambers. The player uses a device that creates the eponymous portals on flat surfaces. The player can enter one portal and exit the other so as to traverse through the world in contradiction to the rules of Euclidean geometrical space. This device allows the player to solve puzzle in each test chamber and progress to the end of the game.

Gone Home Review

Natural Selection 2 Review

Natural Selection 2 is a multiplayer game that is a mixed first person shooter and strategy game. Aliens and marines fight over various locations in a first person shooter, while a commander on each team researches upgrades, builds buildings, and issues orders. Aliens can chuckle at their enemies while marines can dispense a variety of taunts, including one that goes “now there’s something you don’t see every day… thank God.”
