In Dear Esther, the player explores an island in the Hebrides while listening to narration detailing letters written to the eponymous Esther about various topics. Various locations on the island trigger various items of narration, and certain aspects of the island are randomized. Which items of narration are triggered is also randomized to a degree.

In Papers, Please the player plays as a documents inspector at a border checkpoint in a fictional Eastern European country named Arstotzka. The player must earn a wage each day to provide heat, food, shelter, and medicine for their family. The player is paid based on how many documents they inspect each day. Making a mistake while inspecting a document leads to a reduction in the player’s wage. The storyline branches depending on the player’s choices about who to let through, whether to accept bribes, and other actions that the player can take.

In Proteus the player explores an island. The island is uniquely generated each time the player plays the game. The player is able to interact with things on the island, including its flora and fauna, by walking near these things. During the player’s playthrough, the island can change.

In Gone Home, the player controls Katie Greenbriar, who has returned from a trip in Europe to her family’s new home only to find her family missing.
