Mass Effect 3 Omega DLC Review

Genre | Third Person Shooter with optional RPG elements
Developer | BioWare
Platforms | PC, PS3, XBOX 360, Wii U

The Mass Effect 3 Omega DLC is downloadable content for the third game in the Mass Effect series.  It allows the player to visit the eponymous Omega, a space station that has been taken over by Cerberus. While on the space station, the player can engage in conversations, shoot enemies, and locate a couch.

The Mass Effect 3 Omega DLC features two new weapons, five new weapon mods, two new powers that the player’s character can learn, two new kinds of enemies, and two new squadmates available for the duration of the mission then never again. One of the two new weapons is also available if the player plays the demo for Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning and another is available if the player preordered Mass Effect 3 from certain retailers.

The two new squad members are Aria T’Loak and Nyreen Kandros. Aria uses profanity in her speech, wears a jacket that is approximately one and a half feet tall and which covers her arms and part of her breasts, leaves much of her bare torso exposed, wears high heels, and is able to use biotic powers in combat. Nyreen is the leader of a resistance movement fighting against Cerberus on the station. Members of the movement give the Black Power salute to her when they see her. Nyreen has biotic and tech powers and is the first female turian to appear in the entirety of the Mass Effect series. The first aliens the player encounters in the first Mass Effect game are two male turians.

The graphics in the game are in a realistic style. They depict parts of Omega, including a mining operation, a large generator that gives off arcs of purple lightning, large vistas showing a cityscape, and corridors that are often brown. The sound in the game mostly consists of combat noises and conversations, including conversations where Nyreen expresses worry about the capabilities of one of the new enemy types. The music is similar in style to that of the Mass Effect 3.

In the Mass Effect 3 Omega DLC the Cerberus forces are controlled by General Oleg Petrovsky. When Oleg is first seen, he is playing chess. Later the game shows him regarding a chess set. When the player finishes the mission, the chess set shows up on their ship. One of the new enemy types is said in conversation to be able to transform its victims into more of that type of enemy. This does not occur in the Mass Effect 3 Omega DLC. Its nonoccurrence is remarked upon but not explained.

This is a score for an objective game review. The score is a 6.5 out of 10.
